Om Prakash Singh Rana is an alumnus of Indian Naval Academy. After Post Graduation, he joined Indian Navy in Jul 81 and commissioned on 01 Jan 1983. Subsequently, he specialised in Armament stream. He graduated from Garhwal University, Madras University, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT)/ Deemed University and Bombay University, where he did MSc (Mathematics), MSc (Def & Strategic Studies), Special Weapons Course/ PG (Aerospace) and MPhill (Def & Strategic Studies) respectively. His other service courses include Technical Staff course, Staff Course from DSSC Wellington and Naval Higher Command Course.
Admiral Rana had an illustrious career in Navy spanning over 36 years. In his various appointments, he was involved in:
1. Development, production, transfer of technology, quality assurance, indigenisation, life assessment, life cycle management, etc of strategic and tactical armament systems in association with DRDO, Ordnance Factories & Public/ Pvt industry and services.
2. Faculty & Head of Department/ Director of Studies(Navy) at DIAT(DU) and member of Lab Research Committee NSTL/ DRDO.
3. Principal Director and Director General at Integrated Headquarters-Ministry of Defence(Navy).
He also participated in many national/ international seminars/ workshops and presented papers on armament design, indigenisation, production, quality, life cycle management, life extension/ assessment related subjects.
For his outstanding career in service, Rana was promoted to the flag rank/ Rear Admiral on 01 Apr 2013 and appointed as Director General Naval Armament Inspection. For his exceptional contributions to service and nation, Admiral Rana was awarded; Commendations by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command and Chief of the Naval Staff and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) by the Honourable President of India.
Post superannuation on 31 Aug 2017, Admiral Rana joined BrahMos Aerospace and made immense contributions by setting up 220 acres state of the art BrahMos missile integration facilities at Pilani and on completion of his assignment, moved on to settle down at Dehradun in Jan 2019.
Presently, Admiral Rana is engaged in writing articles, mentoring students, reviewing PhD thesis and delivering talks on defence academics, technologies, engineering and Atmanirbhar Bharat related subjects at Universities and Scientific Institutions besides providing suggestions to Navy and Govt organisations as and when sought.
